Italy

Yesterday we began a year long partnership with the Fourth Graders. We celebrated the Italian culture with food, crafts, singing, games and stories. The fourth graders from Mrs. Straka’s class were our tour guides. Each student was responsible to guide a group of 2-4 Kindergarten students through six centers.

The Craft Center

Each child created an artistic mosaic tile picture. Using a variety of colored squares children created works of art just as the great artist in Rome may have done for centuries.

The Story Center

Each child listened to the stories of Stega Nona and Big Anthony by Tomie DePaola. We pin pointed on a map, all of the places that Big Anthony traveled throughout the story.

The Writing Center/Our Suitcases

We began a traveling suitcase which will house a reflective piece of writing for each student about the country of study. Today we drew pictures and wrote about what we have learned about Italy. We liked the cookies, making the flag and playing hopscotch.

The Game Center

We learned that the oldest known hopscotch board is etched into the floor of the Forum in Rome. We took turns and enjoyed playing hopscotch outside.

The Food and Cultural Artifact Center

We enjoyed Italian cookies and juice while looking at many pictures, maps, traditional clothing and dolls and other amazing Italian artifacts. We were also delighted to receive a visit from two grandparents who shared fascinating stories with us.

The Flag Center

We looked at the flag of Italy and colored a red, white, green flag to take home.

Our first International Celebration was a huge success. We look forward to our Celebration of England next month. If you can help with any artifacts, food or personal stories, please contact Mrs. Rahilly at westmainpizza@cox.net or 683-7568.
